Our Lady of Sorrows Church
Originally located on the Old Town Plaza (where the Wesch-Dold Building now stands), Nuestra Senora de Dolores Catholic Church was built one block west of the Plaza to serve a growing congregation. Built between 1862 and 1870, and the largest stone building in New Mexico when it was completed, the construction of Our Lady of Sorrows was clearly a labor of love. A folk expression of Gothic Revival architecture (influenced no doubt by the Archbishop Lamy), Our Lady of Sorrows is made of randomly-fit blocks of Anton Chico sandstone. Inside, an impressive century-old pipe organ dominates the sanctuary from the choir at the rear.
