Dr. Rice Residence

Located behind the Las Vegas City Schools Administration Building on Douglas Avenue (formally the East Las Vegas Post Office), sits a fine two-and-one-half story stone mansion. The stone residence at 511 Ninth Street was the home of Dr. Rice, and in the early days boasted a tennis court on the south lawn. An overgrown arbor still remains from those leisurely Victorian days. Built in 1898, Dr. Rice's residence displays the complex roof massing and house plan typical of Queen Anne residences. Graceful flourishes in the roof gables are Queen Anne touches, but the porch columns suggest a classical influence which was sweeping American after the Chicago World's Fair of 1893.
