In the 1890's, the two towns of Las Vegas grew to an extent where the Sisters of Loretto Academy and the De LaSalle Institute, the parochial schools of Old Town, and their counterpart the Las Vegas Academy of New Town, became insufficient to educate all of the youth. Four large structures built of local sandsone were erected for the four school Districts in town. The Castle School was the most ambitious architecturally of the four, having medieval crenelated roof parapets and towers. All of the above mentioned school buildings no longer exist or are greatly altered.
