J.N. Furlong was perhaps Las Vegas' most important photographer, taking many of the critical shots relevant to our town's history. Furlong, was also postmaster in 1879 when the railroad arrived, and as such he became responsible for the locating of the new post office. Despite objections raised by some who wanted to see Old Town develop toward the crestone west of town, he decided for a position next to the Gallinas River at the base of Bridge St., which his Post Office basically created.
This building soon housed R.G. McDonald's wholesale liquor house, succeeded after his death in 1892, by T.J. Raywood. The bracketed pressed metal cornice and window hoods on this commercial Victorian Italianate were superb. This building was transformed into a one-story brick building.
