These companies were the great commission houses of the Plains, first following the Kansas-Pacific R.R.to Kit Carson CO. then following the A.T. & S.F. R.R. to Las Vegas. These huge trading houses resided in all of the end-of-track towns, their path being Leavenworth KS., Junction City, Ellsworth, Sheridan, Fort Wallace, Kit Carson CO., Granada, Las Animas, La Junta, El Moro, Trinidad, Otero NM., then Las Vegas. At Las Vegas these two commission houses faced one another, creating a passage to the mouth of Center St.

Otero, the town, was named after Miguel Antonio Otero Sr., who is credited with providing the A.T. & S.F. with a charter through New Mexico along with favorable legislation. Don Miguel was N.M.'s Delegate to Congress 1855-61, and founded the San Miguel National Bank and the first telephone company in N.M. Don Miguel's funeral train is shown earlier in this exhibit with the Depot Hotel. The Otero family was from Valencia, New Mexico. Likewise Francisco Manzanares's family was from Abiquiu N.M. These two wood frame commission houses were replaced by brick buildings.
