| Acequia Madre de Los Romeros is probably the most active of all the Gallinas River acequia system, with over 30 landowners currently using it. It diverges east from the river south of the community of San Antonia (about 1/2 mile below the Baca Ditch). At one time this ditch probably irrigated land where 7th Street and Mills Avenue intersect, but now it ends before reaching that area. Development of land that had previously been used for crops was often the reason for changing the diversion point or path of an acequia. This ditch now irrigates land in North Las Vegas and parallels several roads there. One may drive along the ditch by following Old National Road north from Erb Street or see it on the east side of 8th Street a block or two north of Mills Avenue. |
