![]() Acequia Madre de Las Vegas is another of Las Vegas' oldest ditches, dating back prior to 1835, the year of settlement in Las Vegas. Its diversion from the Gallinas River is located roughly halfway between Mills Avenue and Bridge Street. To see it, walk north along the river from the Bridge Street bridge until the New Mexico Highlands University tennis courts and baseball filled are on your right (east side of the river). Descend the riverbank and look for the ditch's diversion on the west side of the river. Another accessible length of Acequia Madre is found by leaving the old town plaza at its southeast corner and following Gonzales Street south. The acequia begins to parallel the roadway at a point about 100 yards south of the plaza. One may also see the remains of stones embedded in the wall of the ditch - a defining measure from an earlier time when the ditch was more carefully maintained because it was the only source of water for its users. This acequia's desagua (wasteway channel) rejoins the Gallinas River near Grand Avenue and Interstate 25 south of Las Vegas. |
