Historic Acequias of Las VegasOver the years Las Vegas has been served by several main ditches leaving the Gallinas River at different points and serving different sections of the young community as it grew. These acequias composed a thorough irrigation system for the village. In recent years, however, a variety of factors have led to many of the ditches falling into disuse - new technology, changes in land use, growth of the community, disputes of water rights and lack of water. Some of the empty an unused ditches were filled in and built on. Present- day discount stores on North 7th Street have been built over portions of Acequia Madre de Los Vigiles, for example. Yet, several ditches remain operational, transporting precious water from the Gallinas River to many landowners across Las Vegas. Here, they are listed north to south.
